Frequent clogging of precision (security) filter cartridges—typically installed immediately before RO or UF membranes—is a clear operational warning sign. It indicates that upstream pre-treatment components are underperforming or misconfigured, allowing excessive suspended solids, colloids, organic fouling, or hardness scale precursors to reach the final filtration stage.

- Multimedia filter inefficiency: Check turbidity and SDI (Silt Density Index) of effluent—if >3.0 or rising trend, backwash frequency, media age (>3–5 years), or inlet flow rate mismatch may be responsible;
- Activated carbon exhaustion: Monitor residual chlorine or TOC (Total Organic Carbon) downstream; if detectable, carbon media has lost adsorption capacity and requires replacement per GB/T 13749-2022 guidelines;
- Softener breakthrough or undersizing: Test hardness at softener outlet; >1 ppm CaCO₃ suggests resin saturation, regeneration failure, or insufficient resin volume for your peak flow—common in barrelled purified water production lines where feed water hardness fluctuates seasonally.
