'Normal operation' (no alarm, glowing lamp, stable voltage) does not guarantee effective microbial inactivation. UV dose = UV intensity × exposure time. If either parameter falls below threshold — due to quartz sleeve scaling, lamp aging (>9,000 hours), incorrect flow rate, or poor sensor calibration — disinfection fails silently.
Before contacting support, perform these three field-verifiable checks:
- Quartz sleeve inspection: Shut down system, drain UV chamber, and visually inspect sleeve surface. Any film, scale, or cloudiness reduces UV transmittance — even if lamp glows. Clean with citric acid solution (pH 2–3); replace if scratched or permanently hazy.
- Flow rate validation: Confirm actual flow matches UV unit’s rated capacity (e.g., 1.5 m³/h for a 20 W UV reactor). Overspeeding cuts exposure time; underspeeding risks overheating. Use calibrated flow meter — not pump speed alone.
- Upstream integrity check: High post-UV microbes often originate upstream — e.g., biofilm in RO permeate tanks, contaminated air in cleanroom filling zones (ISO Class 8), or inadequate pre-filtration allowing particulate shielding of microbes from UV. Review last 72h log data for pressure spikes across UF/RO stages and HEPA filter differential pressure.
